Nomination Criteria

Criteria

Nominations on the form on this site will be considered where a member of the public (including police staff but not police officers or members of the Special Constabulary) have performed outstanding acts of bravery or meritorious civic devotion:

  • In the prevention of crime
  • In assisting the police
  • That contribute towards the maintenance of law and order.

This will not normally include rescues of others from water, fire, road collisions, life threatening situations or resuscitation. Acts of this nature are recognised by several other venerable institutions, links to which can be found below.

Judging Panel

The nominations panel sits in the spring of the year that the awards will be made in. The panel is made up of the president of:

  • President of the Association of Chief Police Officers
  • President of the Association of Police Authorities
  • Honorary Secretary of the National Police Public Bravery Awards
  • Representative of the Police Federation of England & Wales
  • Representative of the Police Superintendents Association
  • Representatives from our sponsors
  • The secretary to the Goldsmiths’ Company
  • Representative of the family of Captain Ralph Binney

 Awards
The nominations committee may make the following decisions:

  • No award
  • Referral to another appropriate body
  • Certificate of Commendation
  • Silver Medal (and certificate)
  • Gold Medal (and certificate)
  • Gold Medal & Binney Medal
  • Additional cash award from the Milners Fund
